USPS Delivered To Wrong Address: What Should I Do?

USPS Package delivered to wrong address . Check the solutions and the reason for usps.

So the post office delivery guy from USPS delivered to wrong address and now you have no idea what to do about it. Well, don’t worry because it happens all the time. You’re certainly not the first person this has happened to and you certainly won’t be last.

Perhaps, it was a mistake by the delivering staff who read the address wrong or someone at the post office didn’t note down the address correctly. Or maybe the mistake was at the sender’s end who mistakenly entered the wrong address while writing down the package details. Whatever the reason was, no one can reverse it but think no further because USPS will retrieve your package.

A Couple of Possible Scenario

Scenario 1

To be on the safe side and as a responsible person, the first thing you should do is let your post office know about the wrong delivery. It’s better if the sender calls or visits the post office in person and informs them.

The USPS will note down a complaint and immediately try to retrieve your parcel if it was the delivery guy’s mistake or if the mistake was at their end in any way.

In most cases, the USPS shall locate your parcel and retrieve it. Soon your parcel shall be in the recovered list and you’ll be able to have your parcel.

This is the most ideal way and 7 out of 10 times this would be the solution to your problem.

Scenario 2

Sometimes if the mistake is at the sender’s end, suppose the address of the destination was not correct right from the start, then USPS may or may not take charge of the problem.

It is only fair if USPS doesn’t take charge and you have to deal with the problem on your own. In that case, it’s best if you let the sender know about your issue. If you both know each other, chances are you’ll be able to deal with this problem on your own.

You can ask the USPS post office to know the consignee’s name, signature, and address. If you can’t file a complaint against the USPS what you can do is go to the receiver yourself and request them to give you your package after providing relevant information. The USPS can find the receiver’s information on the airway bill.

Chances are that the person who did sign and receive the package, may have done it by mistake and he would probably return it to you. You may also be able to have the assistance of USPS while trying to retrieve your package and that should solve your problem.

Tracking your USPS Package

The courier services like USPS and UPS normally have an online tracking system that can help track your order. You may get to know the status of your delivery. In that case, if the status says that your parcel is delivered, chances are that either USPS delivered to wrong address or perhaps there was some hurdle and your package is back at the post office.

Either way, it is best if you keep a check and track your package’s status from time to time until USPS delivers it. You can track your parcel by entering the tracking number given to you on the mailing receipt when you submit your parcel at the post office. The other option to get your tracking number is through the confirmation email you receive from USPS after submitting your parcel.

Tracking Status of the USPS Package that says Delivered

If you were tracking your parcel and now the status of your parcel says delivered, it does not necessarily mean USPS delivered to wrong address.

A few days ago I ordered a bag online and I had to go through a similar experience. I was tracking my package regularly and suddenly it said that USPS delivered my package. Like any normal person, my mind flipped and I started thinking of the worst possible scenario. USPS delivered to wrong address? Did I not enter the correct address? Is it even possible for me to get my package back now?

But to my surprise and ease, after waiting an extra business day for my bag to be delivered, it was delivered.

However, you may want to contact your local USPS post office at once if you experience a situation like this. It’s best to be proactive and take the situation in your own hands instead of sitting down and waiting for things to fix on their own.

I personally had to wait one more day because it was a weekend and there was really nothing much I could do.

Things to Do In case of International Delivery:

  • You should keep a check on your mailbox regularly, in case your local post office sends you a notice to pick up your parcel.
  • In the case of international deliveries, you should also contact your customs office and ask them to inquire about your delivery

Things NOT to Do:

  • You should not panic. Panicking does not help and will only worsen your judgment instead of fixing things. Normally, people do get worried and inquire around which is a good thing but after a day or two, they do receive the package.
  • In the case of international deliveries, it’s best to contact customs instead of USPS. USPS cannot really inquire about your parcels once they’ve reached a different country. Customs office is a much better option in that case.

Conclusion

In the end, if all goes well and it hopefully always does, you will receive your parcel. Try one of the things we’ve asked you to and chances are that your problem will solve. Both situations considered, in case of USPS delivered to wrong address or even if the tracking status incorrectly says delivered, issues like these happen all the time.

There is a chance for a lag in delivery time from when the package tracking status says delivered, to when USPS notifies you to pick up your package. Similarly, other courier users may also get to face the same issue like this one but the solution remains same.

    • Try a PO box if you feel like your mail/packages are not secure of your porch. Porch pirates are not USPS fault. Get insurance or certified mail requiring a signature of receipt is another option.

      • Mail requiring a signature means nothing. My postal carrier took my package to the wrong address and had a random stranger sign for it. Package was insured for $1,900. Still do not have my package. This is not the first time package gets delivered to wrong address. The people worked ng for the USPS are idiots!

    • My package said it was delivered in California when I live in the same state that the company works at and the where I live so it should really only if taken a couple days instead of about 2 3 weeks and somebody actually signed for it there. Since they had somebody sign for it in the sugar got ID correct and handed them the package Get a look directly at the address. But how can it be delivered to a wrong address around where I live where is set it was delivered in California and I live in Florida that doesn’t seem logical that will be mixed accidentally put at my neighbour’s house. That’s a joke. The company I bought this from I did know the only come in one so I ordered another 1 that means probably another package is going to California and I am out even more money. So the USPS is screwing up or the company is screwing up or something illegals going on between that company and shipping stuff out the California. This is the last thing I need in these times. We got a retarded president and A fascist waiting to take over this country…

  6. Tracking said my packages (2) had been delivered to the front door. They were not delivered. I spoke to someone in the carrier office the next day. They reviewed the “satellite” image and said the packages had been delivered to the wrong address (house across the street). They said the carrier was in the neighborhood and they would instruct him to go back and speak to the homeowner. I watched outside of my window as the carrier parked his truck in front of my neighbors home, sat there for a minute or so and then drove away. As he turned around, I flagged him down and inquired about him retrieving my package. He replied, “I really don’t think they have it. But, I’ll go ask if you want me to”. I said I did. He went to the door, conversed briefly (and laughed) with whomever came to the door, got back in his mail truck and drove away – without addressing me. That was over a month ago. I still don’t have my packages and apparently I have no further recourse. Someone else is enjoying my packages and I’m just out of the money I spent. I guess USPS can lose, (or steal) packages and customers simply have to deal with it. I’m so disappointed and angry.

    • Save situation with us. There is someone in the neighborhood enjoying my mother’s day gift. And USPS did not do anything about it. I am frustrated since this have been happening too many times and nothing has been done. So, do we have to stop purchasing items that are supposed to be mailed with USPS?

      • I know it is late but this is happening to me right now. In a prior case I actually had to file a police report and then reported the matter to the Better Business Bureau. Those actions forced USPS’ hands to undertake a real investigation. They discovered it was indeed delivered to the wrong address. I had also started a charge back on my credit card. Amazon had refused to refund my credit card but after the investigation showed it was wrongly delivered and the BBB got involved, they refunded me.

The carriers’ assume that non-delivery is us, the customers, trying to be fraudulent but obviously not all are. Show that you are willing to go to all these steps to recover your mail, especially if it is something that is expensive.

  9. I discovered that my package was delivered to the wrong mailbox. Not the first time. Usually the neighbors are honest, but not this time. I posted on our Nextdoor group to see what comes about it. So far, individuals are saying they experienced the same thing with no luck in receiving the initial item.

  10. My package was delivered to st instead of court, same address next street over. The postmaster told me the carrier delivered it to the wrong address; she called the address and the people there denied receipt of my package. She basically called them liars and they didn’t budge.
And that was it. The postmaster then told me to take it up with the sender, SORRY. What am I supposed to do with that?
The sender told me they aren’t responsible. Ultimately, I had to rely on my credit card company disputing my charge.
USPS took no responsibility for their admitted mistake.

The same thing happened to me again, except I don’t know who received my package. When I went to the post office to inquire, I was confronted, yelled at and refused service.

Best advice i could give is fill out those surveys. Complain to consumer services and the post master general. We the customer, deserve basic services, accountability, respect, and integrity from USPS. We pay their wages; they swore an oath to serve the public.

Today I received someone else’s package at my door. 49th instead of 48th. I’m going to personally deliver it to the rightful owner, as I always do.

    • I am almost at the point of disputing with my credit card company as well. I bought something on etsy, it says delivered to mailbox (our mailboxes are key locked) no package in my mail box so it must of gone to the wrong mailbox. Etsy seller says she did her part and i have to dispute with USPS. I have a feeling USPS will not recover my items as my neighbors probably would of returned them by now if they had received them. Did you win the dispute even though usps says delivered?

  13. This article is so unrealistic. They give people the benifit of the doubt as if ppl are honest and won’t take your stuff. My package came from Japan (Bape Hoodie) and it was delivered to the wrong house. Tracking says it was “handed to resident”. I went to USPS and told them but the girl said that I didn’t have the USPS tracking# which I didn’t bc it was sent from Japan through SpeedPAK & USPS sub-contracts for them. She told me to leave their property when I questioned her capabilities to do her job bc she couldn’t find my package. It took me 2 min to cross reference my tracking# to the packages that were delivered to my house that day, another which had traveled through customs with the one I am missing & sure enough one of them matched and I had the USPS tracking # but then they wouldn’t let me back in the he building LoL… I’m mad bc I live 2 houses down from a bunch of Tweakers & there’s no way I’ll ever get my $500 hoodie back if it was delivered to them! So what am I supposed to do!? Why should I have to miss work to sort out someone else’s mistake?! This article acts like ppl are just going to give you your package back…smh this is the real world and in the reality that I live in, 60% of ppl will keep a mystery package for themselves! Especially if they can sell it and buy more Meth!

Do everting I can at the USPS store, been notice the package location, but don’t know the person’s name. I went there and try asking, those guy tell me there’s no package when I try to tell him more detail(that person in the house answer me really quick, don’t event think about it, that makes me feel he took my package and try lie to me) think about calling police to deal with it, is that the police will accept this problem? or there’s anything I can do for it? I’m in the California LA.

  16. Well paypal refunded my money so I guess they ate the loss as I thinkthe lady that shipped the item would have kept her payment and according to tracking she did ship the item. However I don’t have enough of my

Covid stimulus left to buy the item new.
First time I called the post office they gave me the address to which the item had been delivered. Two days latervwhen I called again to seewhether thevpostal service could make a retrieval attempt, I had little hope as it was over three weeks since delivery, I got another agent, male this time, who refusedvto give the address to which my parcel was delivered and who maitained that the SHIPPER had mixed up tracking numbers.
I find thzt to be unlikely because the tracking history has Amazon in the shipping route and because
I did not receive someone else’s parcel which would have happened if there had been a label switch. This happened in June so after the change in administration but before the rslacement of the Post Master
General ,who many have accused of deliberately sabatoging the Postal Service

  17. When I called my local post office the first time they gave me the delivery address associated with
my tracking number, later the mantainance general manager at the senior facility where I live said he also called and that it might be possible for the postal service to make a recovery attempt. I had little hope
since the tracking history said the delivery had been made three weeks earlier but nevertheless
called my local post office againtwo days latter. This time another agent, male this time, refused to give out the delivery address and claimed that the SHIPPER must have mixed up my tracking number with that of another order. I think that is unlikely as in such a case I would have received someone else’s parcel.
I got my money back from Paypal and presumably the shipper kept her payment but the item I bought used is
too expensive to reorder new from the major optical supply houses with my remaining balance of my Covid stimulus payments

  18. I’ve received MANY packages delivered to my address as ‘returned’ items to the seller. The shipping labels are self printed and provided for printing on the seller’s website. Accordingly, the address provided to the buyer is false, as the seller isn’t at that address. I’m afraid the buyer was swindled!! According to the FTC, I am within the law to keep my mouth shut and KEEP the packages. NOT MY PROBLEM!

My claim with PayPal was denied stating it was delivered. The supervisor at the post office told me “Well, you are going to have to do your homework on google(???) Whoever receives a package in error should give to the rightful owner. I always do. Could happen to you someday.

I have the same issue as many others..package noted as delivered but definitely not the correct address. We have a sophisticated security CCTV at every side of home..yard..driveway and street side mailbox. There we’re no deliveries made to our home at all on that date.We can even see on video footage the exact time USPS delivered to our mailbox that day and it did not even closely match the time it as supposedly delivered.I can see from all the other complaints there never seems to be any solution from USPS .The sender of my package was denied insurance reimbursement as it was noted as delivered. The merchant resent me the order at their expense, but now I am very hesitant to place a new order.
